activity system
As the word implies, an activity system refers to an action and is described by a verb (e.g. to walk, to think, to produce).
entity system
An entity system refers to a “being” and is described by a noun (e.g. a planet, society, organisation, organism, person, cell, atom).
In the net, each string seems to arise from a knot to connect it to another knot. Likewise, an activity system arises from an entity system and connects it to another entity system.
Just as a knot consists of intertwined thread, so an entity system arises from the interaction of various activity systems.
Thus entity systems give rise to activity systems and activity systems give rise to entity systems.
relevance
Since entity systems are composed of activity systems, the whole web of the biomatrix ultimately consists of activity systems. The nature of the biomatrix is activity.
relevance for the change manager
In an organisational context, an activity system refers to a project, function, business process, value chain and supply chain. The entity system refers to the organisation as a whole.
The analysis and redesign of activity and entity systems involve different methodologies.
