An activity system interacts with and is co-produced by activity systems belonging to other entity systems. These can be systems from the naturosphere, psycho-sociosphere and technosphere of the biomatrix. Therefore, any activity system can be viewed from the perspective of different dimensions. For example, an e-learning activity system has a technical dimension (technical aspects of online delivery), economic dimension (cost, price), cultural dimension (scientific, educational, ethical and aesthetic considerations), political dimension (control of user interface, certification), natural dimension (concerns regarding brain-mind functioning and stress of the learner, environmental issues), etc.
There can also be sub-activity systems pertaining to the different dimensions within an activity system. For example, an education institution has different functions (and departments) dealing with the technical aspect of e-learning, supervision, certification, enrolment, financial transactions, etc.
Although all activity systems are multi-dimensional, not necessarily every dimension is of significance in each case.
relevance
Different dimensions act as lenses through which an activity system can be viewed, revealing different facets of the system.
relevance for the change manager
Any system analysis, design and intervention involve multi-dimensionality.
Different stakeholders are associated with different dimensions.
